Baseball Recap: Mooresville Pioneers vs. New Palestine Dragons
With a playoff game on the line, Mooresville rose to the challenge on Saturday. They had just enough and edged the New Palestine Dragons out 3-2. The win was familiar territory for Mooresville who now have six in a row.
Hogan Denny was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 17 over 7.2 innings pitched. Denny has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive pitching appearances. Denny was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Bryce Brabender was excellent, going 3-for-5 with a triple, a stolen base, and two RBI.
On New Palestine's side, Michael Thorpe was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out 12 batters over eight innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits.
On the hitting side, New Palestine saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Matheis, who went 1-for-4 with a stolen base, two RBI, and a double. The team also got some help courtesy of Jackson Kamp, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Even though they lost, New Palestine didn't let batters stay on the plate for long and finished the game with 14 strikeouts. That's the most strikeouts they've managed all season.
Mooresville's victory bumped their record up to 31-3. As for New Palestine, their loss dropped their record down to 25-6.
