Recap: Genesee Wolves vs. Clio Mustangs
The Genesee Wolves were the 39-35 winner over the Clio Mustangs when they last played one another back in December of 2019, but their luck changed this time around. Genesee ended up on the wrong side of a tough 65-44 walloping at the hands of Clio on Friday. Genesee found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and rack up 13 fewer assists than your opponent.
Despite the loss, Genesee saw an underclassman step up: Averie Zinn scored 37 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. Zinn scored a full 84.1% of Genesee's points, the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Simpson Autumn, who scored five points along with 12 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Genesee were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Clio's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ellie Neuhaus led the charge by dropping a double-double on 18 points and 16 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Neuhaus has scored at least 25% of Clio's points. Persia Davis was another key contributor, scoring 22 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Genesee has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season. As for Clio, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Genesee will be playing at home against Carrollton at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Carrollton comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 24 points in their last five games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. Clio is on the road again on Monday and play against Lake Fenton at 7:00 p.m. on January 8th. Lake Fenton presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Clio in Michigan (Lake Fenton is ranked 61st, while Clio is ranked 295th).
