Baseball Recap: Sehome Victorious

Sehome let Nooksack Valley stack five runs on them in the second inning on Wednesday but luckily Sehome prevailed anyway. The Mariners won by a run and slipped past the Pioneers 8-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mariners have posted since March 22nd.

Hudson Neff made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. Neff was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Sehome's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 5-8 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Sehome let Jad Geiger and Gunnar Anderson run wild. Geiger went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Anderson got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. Those two RBI gave Geiger a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Gunnar Tweit, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one run.

Sehome's victory bumped their record up to 7-9. As for Nooksack Valley, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-12 record this season.

Sehome will be playing at home against Blaine at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Mariners 4.1, the Borderites 3.1) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Nooksack Valley, they will venture away from home to challenge Oak Harbor at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something the Pioneers surely won't give up without a fight.
