Basketball Recap: Leo Comes Up Short

If Leo was riding high fresh off their 52-31 takedown of Fort Wayne North Side last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Leo Lions fell 55-44 to the Huntington North Vikings on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Lions of the 47-23 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

Despite the loss, Leo still got an impressive performance from Leah Shappell, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. What's more, Shappell also racked up five assists, the most she's had since back in January. Emma Connally was another key player, putting up eight points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Leo smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in six consecutive matchups.

Leo dropped their record down to 8-7 with the loss, which was their third straight at home. As for Huntington North, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Leo will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Prairie Heights at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Huntington North and Mississinewa will round out the year against one another at at 7:30 p.m. on December 28th.
