Preview: Savannah Savages vs. Maryville Spoofhounds
Savannah is 0-10 against Maryville since October of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Savannah Savages will head out on the road to face off against the Maryville Spoofhounds at 7:00 p.m. Savannah knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matchups -- so hopefully Maryville likes a good challenge.
Last Friday, everything came up roses for Savannah at home against Chillicothe as the team secured a 61-8 win.
Savannah found their leader in underclassman Aiden Knechtenhofer, who rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns on only ten carries, and also threw for 127 yards and three touchdowns while completing 88.9% of his passes. Knechtenhofer was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 68 yards. Zayden Snapp was in the mix as well, providing Savannah with three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Maryville had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 29.4 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Saturday. They secured a 19-14 W over Lutheran North.
Derek Quinlin was the offensive standout of the game as he rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 189 yards and a touchdown. The team also got some help courtesy of Delton Davis, who picked up 113 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Savannah's victory was their third straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 6-1. They've been dominating across those matches too: they took their wins by an average of 48.33 points. As for Maryville, their win was their seventh straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 6-1.
We should be in store for an exciting game Friday as Savannah and Maryville have no problem gaining yardage. Savannah has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 353.1 total yards per game. However, it's not like Maryville struggles in that department as they've been even better at 375.5 per game. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
Savannah came up short against Maryville when the teams last played back in November of 2022, falling 33-28. Can Savannah avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
