Baseball Recap: Plainville Takes a Loss

Plainville extended their losing streak to five on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 6-8 in the process. They fell 4-1 to the Pomperaug Panthers. That's two games in a row now that the Blue Devils have lost by exactly three runs.

As for Pomperaug, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-9. Four seems to be a good number for they as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

For Pomperaug's part, Alex Augustine spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits. The Panthers are 4-1 when Augustine allows one or fewer earned runs, but 3-8 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Andrew Brocksmith, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of Pomperaug's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 4-9 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Cloutier, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Looking ahead, Pomperaug will venture away from home to take on New Milford at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Plainville will be paying especially close attention to the Panthers' match: after the Panthers face off against Masuk, they'll take on Plainville again at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
