Basketball Recap: Lovington Comes Up Short

Lovington was the 50-46 winner over Portales when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Lovington Wildcats were outmatched by the Portales Rams and fell 74-40. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Wildcats have suffered against the Rams since February 4, 2022.

Lovington's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Abigail Shouse, who almost dropped a double-double with ten points and nine rebounds. Shouse has been hot, having posted eight or more boards the last seven times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Aubrey Aranda, who posted nine points and five rebounds.

Lovington's defeat dropped their record down to 13-10. As for Portales, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 13-9 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lovington will take on Artesia at 5:30 p.m. on February 14th. Lovington is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.4 points per game this season. As for Portales, they will square off against Goddard at 5:30 p.m. on February 14th. Portales has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
