Football Preview: Wichita County Indians vs. Rawlins County Buffaloes

Wichita County has gone a perfect 5-0 against Rawlins County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Indians will face off against the Buffaloes at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Rawlins County will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Wichita County extended their winning streak to four on Friday. The Indians simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Ellis 56-6. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Indians' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas football rankings (they are ranked sixth, while the Railroaders are ranked 41st).

Cashton Young was his usual excellent self, rushing for 116 yards and one touchdown on only six carries, while also throwing for 74 yards and one TD on only five passes. His longest rush was for an impressive 55 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another player making a difference was Dylan Luna, who rushed for 74 yards and one score.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Wichita County proved: they limited Ellis to a paltry 3.5 yards per carry. While four picked up at least two total tackles, Young stood above the rest. He rushed for 116 yards and one TD on only six carries, and also threw for 74 yards and one touchdown on only five passes. Wichita County didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 16.6.

The heavy lifting was done by Beau Porter and Ernesto Zermeno, who racked up all four sacks between them. Zermeno is on a roll when it comes to sacks, as he's now posted at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

Meanwhile, Rawlins County hadn't done well against Hoxie recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Buffaloes claimed a resounding 56-6 win over the Indians. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Buffaloes just coasted through the last quarter.

Wichita County better keep an eye on Austin Chumley. He was instrumental in Rawlins County's win, rushing for 183 yards and four scores on only 15 carries. They are undefeated when Chumley posts two or more rushing touchdowns, but 2-3 otherwise. Dominique Paz was another major influence, as he rushed for 159 yards and ran in a TD.

Rawlins County didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Tucker Prideaux and Chumley.

Wichita County's victory bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Rawlins County, their win bumped their record up to 5-3.

Thursday's game might be decided on the ground. Wichita County has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 254.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Rawlins County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 298.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Everything came up roses for Wichita County against Rawlins County in their previous meeting back in November of 2023, as the squad secured a 66-34 victory. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Buffaloes' Ryan Sramek, who rushed for 209 yards and four touchdowns. Now that he won't be playing on Thursday, will it be easier for the Indians to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
