Carterville has gone 9-1 against Herrin recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Lions will take on the Tigers at 11:00 a.m. Carterville is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last ten games.
Carterville's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They put the hurt on St. Bede with a sharp 10-0 win. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by six runs or more this season.
Savannah Gibbs was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Henrikesen, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Carterville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in five consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Herrin took on Marion on Wednesday. The Tigers lost 12-2 to the Wildcats. The loss continues a trend for the Tigers in their meetings with the Wildcats: they've now lost three in a row.
Herrin saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Schramm, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Carterville pushed their record up to 14-2 with the victory, which was their 26th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Herrin, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-7.
Herrin's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Friday. Carterville has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Herrin, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Carterville keep running through batters, or will the Tigers buck the trend?
Everything went Carterville's way against Herrin in their previous meeting last Monday, as Carterville made off with a 13-2 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
