Bay City is 2-7 against El Campo since October of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Blackcats will venture away from home to take on the Ricebirds at 7:00 p.m.
Bay City easily dispatched Floresville last Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Blackcats fell just short of La Vernia by a score of 25-22 on Friday. While the Blackcats didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Bears 15-7 in the first quarter.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Adrian Molina, who picked up 105 receiving yards and a pair of scores. He showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 55 yards. Another passer making a difference was Keimarion Wiggins, who threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, El Campo had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 40 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They really took it to the Tigers/Jaguars for the full four quarters, racking up a 49-7 victory. With the Ricebirds ahead 28-0 at the half, the game was all but over already.
El Campo's win came from a few key players Bay City will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Vladamir Garcia, who rushed for 139 yards and one TD on only 11 carries. His rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fourth straight game with at least 123 rushing yards. Colt Reeve also deserves some recognition as he rushed for his first rushing yard of the season.
El Campo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 272 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 272 rushing yards in five consecutive contests.
Bay City's defeat dropped their record down to 5-2. As for El Campo, their win bumped their record up to 6-1.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Bay City has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 183.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like El Campo struggles in that department as they've been averaging 288.7 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Bay City didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against El Campo when the teams last played back in October of 2024, but they still walked away with a 26-20 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Blackcats since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
