Baseball Recap: Friday's Win Is Coronado's Eighth in Last Ten Outings

Coronado hadn't done well against Pebble Hills recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Thunderbirds came out on top against the Spartans by a score of 7-2. The game was the first time the Thunderbirds have beaten the Spartans on their field since April 20, 2021.

Jackie Gross was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

In other pitching news, Kyle LaBranche tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Ryan Salcedo and Anthony Rivas did most of the damage at the plate: Salcedo scored two runs while going 2-for-4, while Rivas scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Those two hits gave Rivas a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Walt Mann, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Coronado has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Pebble Hills, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-12.

Coincidentally, Coronado and Pebble Hills will both be playing Montwood the next time they take the field. The Spartans will head out to face the Rams at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, while the Thunderbirds will host them at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
