Basketball Recap: Covenant Day Comes Up Short

Covenant Day lost against Cannon back in January of 2023 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Covenant Day Lions were dealt a 75-28 defeat at the hands of the Cannon Cougars. The Lions were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 51-12.

Despite the loss, Covenant Day saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Lila Jones posted six points and 12 boards. The dominant performance also gave Jones a new career-high in assists (two). Another player making a difference was Charlotte Hall, who put up nine points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cannon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Madison Drayton, who went 8 of 13 on her way to 21 points and seven rebounds. With that strong performance, Drayton is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. Jakaila Gaskin was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 15 points and nine boards.

Covenant Day is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-7. As for Cannon, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-5.

Covenant Day didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 59-10 win against South Charlotte on the 18th. As for Cannon, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 65-45 defeat against Montverde Academy on the 20th.
