Football Recap: Spoto Spartans vs. Lennard Longhorns
Spoto lost against Lennard back in October of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Spoto Spartans were dealt a 47-18 loss at the hands of the Lennard Longhorns. The defeat continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Longhorns: they've now lost three in a row.
Several Spartans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Z'Orey Cotton, who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries. Jesse Harden was another key pass catcher, picking up 156 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Lennard was led to victory by Gavin Fields and Michael Merritt. Fields rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, while Merritt rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Merritt got the majority of those yards when he took off on a run and that went for an incredible97 yards. Another player making a difference was Jacob Mobley, who threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Spoto's loss dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Lennard, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Spoto will square off against Plant City at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Lennard, they will take on Blake at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both might be coming in a bit winded given how much these teams ran up and down the field in their prior games.
