Haywood is a perfect 6-0 against Fayette Ware since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Tomcats will welcome the Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Haywood has three straight victories, Fayette Ware has ten straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Haywood made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Bolivar Central, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Tomcats blew past the Tigers 9-2 on Monday. The Tomcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by seven runs or more this season.
Lillian Scott made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Karly Young, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Averie Parnell was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
Haywood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bolivar Central only posted an OBP of .231.
Meanwhile, Fayette Ware came up short against Germantown on Wednesday, falling 18-6.
Haywood pushed their record up to 6-3 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Fayette Ware, their loss dropped their record down to 3-14.
Thursday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Haywood has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .543. However, it's not like Fayette Ware struggles in that department as they've averaged .582. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Haywood's way against Fayette Ware in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Haywood made off with a 20-6 win. Will the Tomcats repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
