Baseball Recap: Grundy County Comes Up Short

Grundy County had lost nine straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 5-18 to make it ten. They lost 10-0 to the South Pittsburg Pirates. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-3 on Thursday.

As for South Pittsburg, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-15 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games.

For South Pittsburg's part, Bailey Fults was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. Fults has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs. He is becoming a predictor of South Pittsburg's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 5-14 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jace Stone, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Britton Case was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two runs.

While Grundy County had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
