Preview: Desert Pines Jaguars vs. Coronado Cougars

The Desert Pines Jaguars will head out on the road to challenge the Coronado Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nevada (Desert Pines is ranked seventh, while Coronado is ranked 19th).

After a string of four wins, Desert Pines' good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They were outmatched by Democracy Prep Agassi Campus on the road and fell 52-23. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Desert Pines has suffered yet this season.

Tatiana Wilder was Desert Pines' leading scorer, having posted seven points.

Meanwhile, Coronado didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Desert Oasis on Friday, but they still walked away with a 53-47 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Coronado.

Coronado's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gabrielle Brooks led the charge by scoring 16 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Ella Creer was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with eight rebounds and four blocks.

Desert Pines' loss ended a ten-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 12-2. As for Coronado, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season.

Wednesday's matchup is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Desert Pines have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 38.8% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Coronado struggles in that department as they've only drained 36.8% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Desert Pines came up short against Coronado when the teams last played back in December of 2016, falling 63-50. Thankfully for Desert Pines, Haley Tyrell (who scored 25 points along with seven rebounds and six assists) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
