Softball Game Preview: Maloney Spartans vs. New Britain Golden Hurricanes

The Maloney Spartans will face off against the New Britain Golden Hurricanes at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

As a matter of fact, Maloney put up the most runs they have all season on Thursday. Everything went their way against Windsor as they made off with a 16-4 victory. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Spartans' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Oliviah Garcia-Matyka and Jenna Quilty did most of the damage at the plate: Garcia-Matyka got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Quilty got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases Quilty has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Alaina High-Aresco, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Maloney always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .636. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, New Britain was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat dating back to last season. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 12-11 heartbreaker at the hands of Farmington. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

The win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 2-3. As for New Britain, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Maloney took their victory against New Britain in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 18-0 score. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Golden Hurricanes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
