Baseball Recap: Rio Grande City's Victory on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Rio Grande City waltzed into their contest on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Roma Gladiators 9-1. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 12-1 on Tuesday.

Hiram Lopez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Aaron Benavidez, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Dante Flores also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Rio Grande City kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 8.8.

Rio Grande City's record now sits at 14-10. As for Roma, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 14-13-1.

As of now, neither Rio Grande City nor the Gladiators have any future games scheduled.
