Baseball Game Preview: Putnam Science Academy vs. Winchendon Wapiti

Putnam Science Academy will square off against the Winchendon Wapiti at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Putnam Science Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another highly-ranked state team: Stony Brook, who was ranked first in their home state at the time (Putnam Science Academy was ranked 22nd). Putnam Science Academy came up short against Stony Brook on Tuesday, falling 19-0. The contest marked the first time this year in which Putnam Science Academy was not able to get on the board.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Winchendon and Worcester Academy meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Wednesday. The Wapiti came out on top against the Hilltoppers by a score of 6-3.

Gianni Melendez and CJ Jones did most of the damage at the plate: Melendez went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Jones went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That's the most runs Melendez has posted over his last seven matches.

Winchendon has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Putnam Science Academy, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-7.
