Softball Recap: Wednesday's Win Is Clay's Seventh in Last Eight Outings

Clay gave up the first runs on Wednesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 6-2 win over the Southern Tornadoes.

Laney Shepherd spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Madison Carver, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Maddie Penix was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Clay is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-8-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Southern, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 16-6 record this season.

As of now, neither Clay nor Southern have any future games scheduled.
