Lake Forest, Glenbrook South girls soccer make Pepsi Showdown semifinals as double-digit seeds

Turns out a high seeding isn't worth too much in the Pepsi Showdown.

The 1, 2, 4 and 6 seeds were all jettisoned Thursday at home sites around Chicago, and the Saturday semifinals are set.

No. 5 Lyons (LaGrange, Ill.) will take on No. 11 Glenbrook South (Glenview, Ill.) at noon and it's No. 10 Lake Forest (Ill.) battling No. 3 Loyola Academy (Wilmette, Ill.) in the other contest at 1:30 p.m. Both are Saturday at Olympic Park in Schaumburg, Ill.

The biggest upset was Lyons knocking out top-seeded New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.) by a 2-0 score. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Kelsey Holbert knocked in a goal with 8:41 left in the game to seal the victory, and she also had an assist on a corner kick that Emily Lange headed in 5:31 into the contest.



Maggie Orlwoski made five saves for Lyons (8-1-1). New Trier fell to 8-1-2.

No. 10 Lake Forest earned a 3-2 triumph over second-seeded Metea Valley (Aurora, Ill.), according to the Beacon-News. Kasey Quon, Sarah McClenahan and Haleigh McPeek all scored for Lake Forest. With a little more than 28 minutes remaining, Lake Forest scored twice in a 71-second span to take a 2-0 lead.

Metea Valley, a first-year varsity program with no seniors, got a pair of goals from Jenna Kentgen.

Loyola (9-0-2), the 3 seed, needed to go to penalty kicks to get past Plainfield North (Ill.) (7-2-2) by a 2-1 score. Two overtimes couldn't produce a victor, and in the penalty kicks, Carly Stevens was the star for Loyola. Stevens knocked in her kick during PKs and stopped three Plainfield North kicks as goalie to secure the win, according to Sun-Times Media.

Grace Smith scored for Loyola, and Kaela Leskovar did the same for Plainfield North.

The other Thursday contest was No. 11 Glenbrook South besting No. 4 Huntley (Ill.) in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and two overtimes, according to the Daily Herald. Glenbrook South (6-3) won 5-3 in PKs, getting a goal from DePaul commit Nina Kodros to seal the win. It was the first loss of the season for Huntley (8-1).
