Softball Game Preview: Ocean Lakes Dolphins vs. Kellam Knights

Ocean Lakes is 1-9 against Kellam since May of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Dolphins will face off against the Knights at 4:00 p.m. Ocean Lakes' pitching crew has only allowed 2.1 runs per game this season, so Kellam's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Ocean Lakes came out on top against Bayside on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run first inning. The Dolphins blew past the Marlins 7-1. The result was nothing new for the Dolphins, who have now won six matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Sam Patterson made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out 16 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Devynn Sawyer, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Addison Munson also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Kellam had just enough and edged out Kempsville 3-2 on Tuesday. The Knights haven't had any issues with the Chiefs recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Ocean Lakes has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Kellam, they pushed their record up to 11-1 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.

Ocean Lakes might still be hurting after the 8-2 loss they got from Kellam when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Dolphins avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
