Basketball Recap: Spearfish Piles Up the Points Against Mahpiya Luta

Spearfish hadn't done well against Mahpiya Luta recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Spearfish Spartans really took it to the Mahpiya Luta Crusaders for the full four quarters, racking up a 70-40 victory. The Spartans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matches by 30 points or more this season.

Spearfish's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Haroon Khan, who posted 11 points. Another player making a difference was Kade Vavruska, who went 5 of 7 en route to 12 points.

Spearfish was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.

Mahpiya Luta's loss came despite strong showings from Braylon Little and Daniel Weston. Little went 5 for 12 on his way to 16 points, while Weston scored eight points. Chaytan Palmier was another key player, putting up four points.

Spearfish's win bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Mahpiya Luta, they dropped their record down to 5-6 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Spearfish will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Thomas More at 7:30 p.m. on January 28th. As for Mahpiya Luta, they will host Belle Fourche at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Mahpiya Luta is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58.3 points per game this season.
