Softball Game Preview: Mainland Regional Mustangs vs. Millville Thunderbolts

Mainland Regional is 1-8 against Millville since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. Mainland Regional will head out to take on Millville at 4:00 p.m. Mainland Regional has given up an average of 8.8 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mainland Regional is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 14 runs on Friday, they were much more limited against Ocean City on Monday. They lost 11-2 to the Raiders. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Mustangs have suffered since April 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Millville ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Egg Harbor Township 9-7. The game was the first time the Thunderbolts have beaten the Eagles on their field since April 12, 2019.

Jaslene Negron spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered seven runs (all of which were unearned) on eight hits.

On the hitting side, Isabella Musey and Gabriella Jacquet did most of the damage at the plate: Musey went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Jacquet went 3-for-5 with three RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Kherington Rothmel, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-5.

They weren't the only ones working in the hit department: Millville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Egg Harbor Township only managed eight hits.

Millville's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Mainland Regional, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.

Mainland Regional couldn't quite get it done against Millville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 as they fell 8-3. Can Mainland Regional avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
