League recap: Mendota tops Yosemite to extend winning streak

West Sierra recap Sept. 26, 2012

Mendota extended the longest winning streak in West Sierra this week by beating Yosemite, 31-7. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.

Firebaugh moved up to 715 from 764 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Eagles were able to make the jump by beating Caruthers 26-18.

Firebaugh's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Josh Allen threw for 163 yards and Jordan Martinez had 100 yards receiving. On the ground Frank Herrera chipped in 93 yards. Christian Patlan helped Firebaugh's passing attack out by catching one ball for 40 yards.

Bill Magnusson's team's Allen and Martinez have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Allen has thrown for 520 yards this season, while Martinez, a 5-foot-8 receiver, has 43 catches for 147 yards. Ryan Vasquez from Coalinga leads the league in rushing with 318 yards.

Tranquillity took down Riverdale 68-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
