Baseball Preview: George West Longhorns vs. Odem Owls
The George West Longhorns will venture away from home to square off against the Odem Owls at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Having struggled with three defeats in a row, George West turned things around against West Oso on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Bears by a score of 5-1.
George West saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Trevor Poe, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Davian Zuniga also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Odem hadn't done well against Mathis recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Odem was the clear victor by a 7-1 margin over Mathis. The Owls might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by six runs or more this season.
Chaise Ford was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and only one walk). That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one triple and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Payton Simmons, who scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Odem is undefeated when Simmons posts two or more runs, but 6-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Evan Nunez, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.
Odem always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mathis only posted an OBP of .280.
Odem has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season. George West now has a winning record of 14-13-2.
