MaxPreps Top 10 Texas High School Football Games of the Week

By Randy Jennings Sep 4, 2019, 1:30pm

After knocking off No. 1 North Shore, Katy back on road to meet Atascocita.

After eight days of receiving well-deserved pats on the back for a comeback victory over former MaxPreps Texas No. 1 North Shore (Houston), the Katy Tigers have to deal with another severe road test this week.

The matchup between host Atascocita (Humble) and the Tigers on Friday night is the headliner for the MaxPreps Texas top games for Week 2.

Atascocita is athletic with high-level players at all the offensive skill positions. It should make for another nice contrast with Katy's reliance on a great defense (shut out North Shore in the second half) and a power running game built around Ron Hoff.

Katy climbed from preseason No. 5 in Texas to No. 2 this week. Note: MaxPreps Texas Top 25 rankings included.

Wall at Cisco

Top players

Wall: QB Mason Fuchs (6-0, 155), FB Chase Rios (5-9, 170), DL Stuart Bumann (6-4, 220), RB/DB Kye Herbert (5-11, 175), MLB Colton Diebitsch (5-10, 185)

A pair of Class 3A powers, but in different divisions. Wall is in D1 and Cisco in D2, but both have designs on sending an early message. Both journeyed outside 3A for convincing opening wins last week, Wall over 2A Mason 47-7 and Cisco over 4A Sweetwater 49-27.

Yoakum at Cuero
7:30 p.m. Friday, Gobbler Stadium

Top players

Yoakum: WR Ty Love (6-2, 180), OL Connor Schomburg (6-2, 305), RB/MLB Sean Romero (5-10, 185), DE/TE AJ Arroyo (5-11, 190)

Texas High: DE/TE Clayton Smith (6-4, 215), WR Kobe Webster (6-1, 180), RB/SS Tra'keci Cooper (6-0, 180), OL Eric Poe (5-11, 275), LB/RB Braylon Stewart (5-11, 178)

Arkansas High: QB/FS Braylon Bishop (6-0, 175), DE Larry Jefferson (6-2, 232), C Gaylon Williams (6-1, 290), RB/CB Torie Blair (5-7, 165)

The rivalry dates to 1912 between sister cities straddling the state line. Texas has the upper hand of late, winning nine and tying once in the last 12 meetings. Arkansas High, under former Texas High coach Barry Norton, won its season opener. The Tigers are 0-1.

Dickinson is a fast-improving club from southeast Houston with double-digit wins in four of its last five seasons. A victory over Dallas area power Allen would be a program boost. Allen is trying to build on a seven-year streak of at least 14 wins in a season. Both teams won in the opening week.

Lee (Tyler) at John Tyler (Tyler)
7 p.m. Saturday, Earl Campbell Field at Rose Stadium

Top players

Tyler Lee: DL/TE Jamal Ligon (6-3, 250), RB Jamarion Miller (5-10, 175) QB Mark Patton (6-6, 240), DB Elliott Davison (6-0, 180), WR/DB Te'vion Massey (5-11, 165)

John Tyler: CB/RB Kitan Crawford (5-10, 180), DB Isaiah Johnson (6-1, 200), OL Angel Sarmiento (6-2, 270), DL Kimbrick McCaney (6-0, 245), DL/OL Ashton Williams (6-0, 300)

With just two public high schools in Tyler, the Rose City Rivalry is a game both teams covet like no other. The series began in 1958 and this is the 64th edition. John Tyler, the older school, has a four-game lead in the series (33-29 with one tie) including a 65-21 thrashing of Lee last year. However, Lee won its opening game last week over Marshall while John Tyler lost by 22 points to Horn (Mesquite).

Having knocked off Silsbee 48-35 last week, Port Neches-Groves tries for a repeat scenario against Huntsville, a 55-22 Week 1 winner over Willis. Both are Class 5A-D2 powers that have already proven they can ring up points.

Brennan (San Antonio) at Warren (San Antonio)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Farris Stadium

Top players

Brennan: QB Jordan Flores (6-3, 187), RB/WR Darryon Tolefree, DT/OL Shaquan Flagg (6-5, 255), DT/OL Ryan Curtis (6-2, 250), FS Justino Escobar (5-8, 160)

Both teams are members of the 10-team District 28-6A, one of a handful of districts in the UIL that plays nine district games. So, the playoff drive begins here. Warren went three rounds last year and Brennan went two and both are favored to be in the mix again. Warren won last year, 33-21.
