Montgomery dropped to 4-4 on Tuesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They came up short against the South Hunterdon Eagles, falling 16-8. The Cougars were not able to make up for their defeat to the Eagles from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.
Montgomery saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matilda Suh, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple marked the first that Suh has hit this season. Another was Isabella Malek, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
As for South Hunterdon, the victory got them back to even at 2-2. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On South Hunterdon's side, Elsie Scheetz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits (and only one walk). Scheetz has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Erin O'Rourke was incredible, going 3-for-6 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Anika Balog was another key player, going 2-for-6 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
Looking ahead, Montgomery will square off against Belvidere at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The game will give the Cougars their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for South Hunterdon, they will be playing at home against Manville at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
