Baseball Recap: California Victorious

The home team had won the previous four meetings between California and Monte Vista, and California kept the tradition alive. The Grizzlies had just enough and edged out the Mustangs 3-2 on Wednesday. That's two games straight that the Grizzlies have won by just one run.

Brayden Gijbels tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because California is 4-2 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 3-5 otherwise.

At the plate, California saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Angelo Sherman, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Sherman is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another was Ethan Rye, who scored a run and stole two bases.

California's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-7. As for Monte Vista, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-14 record this season.

California will have a chance to go back-to-back against Monte Vista: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
