North Carolina high school star Layla Lamar notches softball Holy Grail – home run cycle in order

Panther Creek senior hit for the ultimate cycle with solo, two-run and three-run homers consecutively followed by grand slam to end game.

Layla Lamar of Panther Creek (Cary, N.C.) hit for the home run cycle in a 15-3 victory over Middle Creek (Apex, N.C.) on Monday.

The Florida pledge hit a solo home run in the first, a two-run and three-run homer in the third and a grand slam to end the game in the fifth.

Overall she went 4-for-4 with four home runs and 10 RBI.

Lamar's feat is the Holy Grail for baseball and softball at the high school, college and professional levels. Only one instance can be found of a player hitting the home runs and doing it in order like Lamar did.
In 2002, Brian Sprout of St. Olaf College in Minnesota also pulled off the rarity.

In MLB history a player has only hit four home runs in the same game 18 times since 1894. None of those players ever hit for the home run cycle. At least two minor league baseball players have hit for the home run cycle but not in order like Lamar.

Over the years several high school and collegiate athletes in softball and baseball have hit for the home run cycle, but again none in order.

Back to Monday, Lamar homered in the first inning to put Panther Creek up 1-0. When she stepped to the plate in the third inning, her team trailed 3-1.

Not for long.

On a 1-0 pitch, she blasted the ball over the wall to tie up the game. Panther Creek's bats caught fire and she got to bat again in the frame with an 8-3 lead. With runners on first and third, Lamar got her pitch and hit her third home run of the game to make the score 11-3.

In the fifth, she came up with the bases loaded. With the count even at 1-1 Lamar swung and powered her fourth home run over the fence to put the Catamounts up 15-3 to end the game.

Lamar is hitting .516 on the season with seven home runs. She has 25 home runs in her career.

Junior Jolyna Lamar had the best seat in the house to watch her sister's accomplishment. She watched from the on-deck circle as all four of Layla's home runs sailed over the fence. Jolyna is hitting .462 this season and is committed to UCLA.

The Lamar sisters come from a family full of athletes. Their mom Marissa Young was a three-time All-American, hitting a then-program record 13 home runs while recording 88 wins as a pitcher. She is now the head coach at Duke, which is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Their father James Lamar played football at Indiana. Brother Braylon followed in his footsteps and is now at Miami after graduating from Panther Creek.
