Softball Recap: Powell County Victorious

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Elliott County, Powell County was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They walked away with an 11-8 win over the Buckhorn Wildcats. The Pirates haven't had any issues with the Wildcats recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.

Kylie Shick made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up eight earned runs off six hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in May of 2025. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Ella Napier was a standout: she went a perfect 5-for-5 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those five hits gave her a new career-high. Taylor Slone was another key player, going 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

The win got Powell County back to even at 9-9. As for Buckhorn, they are on a 14-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-12.

Looking ahead, Powell County will host Martin County at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Buckhorn, they will head out on the road to face off against Owsley County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Owls / Lady Owls have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 17.67 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of.
