Recap: Clovis Wildcats vs. Lovington Wildcats
On Tuesday, the Clovis Wildcats faced the Lovington Wildcats in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Clovis walked away with a 67-55 win over Lovington. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Zarai Lewis continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 31 points along with five rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. Kailyn Jefferson was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Lovington's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Elizabeth Buendia, who scored 22 points along with two steals, and Ashelynn Borunda who scored ten points along with six steals and five rebounds. Buendia is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Erlin Salcido, who scored four points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Clovis' win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.2 points per game. As for Lovington, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Clovis will take on Espanola Valley at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Espanola Valley will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New Mexico Rankings (they are ranked 39th, while Clovis is ranked fourth). As for Lovington, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Carlsbad at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th.
