Basketball Recap: Speedway Starts off Right with Win over Western Boone

Speedway had to kick off their season on the road on Thursday, but they showed no ill effects. They walked away with a 67-60 win over the Western Boone Stars. The Sparkplugs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Stars, too.

Speedway's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Madelynn Matelic led the charge by shooting 53% from the field en route to 24 points and eight boards. Those 24 points gave Matelic a new career-high. Macy DeLisle was another key player, going 7-for-11 to rack up 17 points and five steals.

When it comes to explaining why Western Boone lost, don't look at Emmerson Gott. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Ally Lewis, who posted eight points in addition to 12 boards and five steals.

Looking ahead, Speedway will face off against Indian Creek at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Western Boone, they will take on Rossville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
