Baseball Recap: Pomona Drops Season-High Score on Bassett

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Pomona). They were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over the Bassett Olympians on Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Red Devils needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.

Emmanuel Campos tossed a big game, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Pomona is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 4-6 otherwise.

At the plate, Ivan Lopez and Noah Zayas did most of the damage at the plate: Lopez got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs, while Zayas went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Lopez is becoming a predictor of Pomona's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 5-1 (and 2-5 when he doesn't). Michael Huguez also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Pomona moved to 7-6 with that victory, which also ended their five-game losing streak. As for Bassett, they are on a 17-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-14.

Pomona will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Olympians: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
