Basketball Recap: Fleming Skates Past Denver Waldorf with Ease

On Saturday, everything came up roses for the Fleming Wildcats against the Denver Waldorf Spartans as the squad secured a 54-22 victory. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 70th, while the Spartans are ranked 297th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Fleming was led to victory by Brooke Schaefer and Ciana Lousberg. Schaefer posted 12 points and eight steals, while Lousberg went 5 of 8 to rack up 10 points in addition to six steals and five rebounds. Schaefer is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Hayley Chamberlain was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Fleming smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in seven consecutive matches.

Denver Waldorf's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Annie O'Meara, who earned ten points, and Havi Flores, who had four points and four steals. Those ten points gave O'Meara a new career-high.

Fleming's win bumped their record up to 13-4. As for Denver Waldorf, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season.

Coming up, Fleming will head out to take on Briggsdale at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Briggsdale is on a four-game streak of home wins, Fleming a four-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Denver Waldorf, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 67-19 loss against Caliche on the 10th.
