Basketball Recap: Southside Comes Up Short

If Southside was riding high fresh off their 64-18 takedown of Jones last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Southside Seahawks lost to the Pamlico County Hurricanes on the road by a 68-49 margin on Thursday. The loss continues a trend for the Seahawks in their matchups with the Hurricanes: they've now lost four in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Southside lost, don't look at Michelle Brown. Despite the final result, she dropped a triple-double with ten points, ten rebounds, and 11 blocks. The dominant performance gave Brown a new career-high in blocks. Another player making a difference was Tamya Smith, who posted 13 points and three steals.

Even though they lost, Southside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 19 consecutive contests.

Pamlico County's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sydney Whitley-Reese led the charge by going 9-for-21 en route to 28 points along with six boards and six steals. Whitley-Reese is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nya Clark, who went 9-for-18 on her way to 20 points and six steals.

Southside's defeat dropped their record down to 14-8. As for Pamlico County, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 20-4 record this season.

Looking ahead, Southside will square off against Lejeune at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pamlico County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
