Softball Game Preview: Odem Owls vs. Ingleside Mustangs

The Odem Owls are taking a road trip to take on the Ingleside Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Odem has given up an average of 8.7 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Odem is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Mathis just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Friday. They came up short against the Pirates, falling 16-4.

Anabella Santellana made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Presley Simmons was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.

Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Ingleside ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Santa Gertrudis Academy 2-1.

Kylee Ward spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Ingleside's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Leilani Smith, who went 1-for-4 with one triple and one run. Ruby Eppard also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Ingleside pushed their record up to 15-7 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Odem, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 9-11.

Odem might still be hurting after the 14-1 loss they got from Ingleside in their previous meeting back in March of 2023. Can Odem avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
