Basketball Recap: Doral Academy Firebirds vs. Miami Christian Victors
Even though the Doral Academy Firebirds have not done well against the Miami Christian Victors recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Doral Academy took down the Victors 62-46. Given Doral Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 21st, while the Victors are ranked 100th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Ashley Martinez continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 20 points and 4 assists. Angelina Deleon was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with seven rebounds.
Despite the loss, Miami Christian still got an impressive performance from Maria De Gracia, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds. That was a full 45.7% of Miami Christian's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jazlyn Laguna, who scored seven points along with five steals.
The victory was the third in a row for Doral Academy, bringing their record for this year to 17-6. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 75.0 points per game. As for Miami Christian, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-12.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Doral Academy will take on the Lions at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Miami Christian, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cyclones at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 53.5 points per game this season.
