Volleyball Recap: Shelton Wins High-Profile Matchup Against Masuk

Shelton faced Masuk in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Gaels put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 3-0 win. That's more bragging rights for the Gaels, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Shelton never let Masuk on the board, but things got pretty close in the first set. The final score came out to 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.

Dominic Durante paced Shelton's offense, picking up ten kills. Durante got some help from Matthew Reilly and his 36 assists. Finally, Preston Hyner kept Shelton's defense grounded, leading the team with three blocks.

Masuk's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Andrew Oleyar, who had ten digs and one assist.

Shelton is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season. As for Masuk, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-4.

Coincidentally, Shelton and Masuk will both be playing Newtown the next time they take the court. The Panthers will head out to face the Nighthawks at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, while the Gaels will host them at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
