Basketball Preview: Providence Day Chargers vs. Cannon Cougars

The Providence Day Chargers will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Cannon Cougars at 5:30 p.m. Hopefully Providence Day focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Friday.

While it was all tied up 19-19 at halftime, Providence Day was not quite the Lions' equal in the second half on Friday. Providence Day took a 46-37 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lions. While losing is never fun, Providence Day can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 28th in North Carolina, while the Lions are ranked fourth in South Carolina).

Providence Day's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Jaida Mcclure, who scored 16 points, and Ellie Fyans who scored 11 points along with six rebounds. Mcclure has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times she's played.

Meanwhile, Cannon scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Charlotte Christian 81-26 at home. Cannon has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten matches by 20 points or more this season.

Maya Mccorkle and Kierra Morrow were among the main playmakers for Cannon as the former dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds and the latter dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds. Morrow has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Brooke Busby, who scored 15 points along with two steals.

Providence Day's loss dropped their record down to 18-8. As for Cannon, their victory was their 21st straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 18-7.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Providence Day have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 25.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Cannon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.8 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Providence Day ended up a good deal behind the Cougars in their previous meeting back in January, losing 63-47. Will Providence Day have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other basketball content.
