Football Game Preview: Varela Vipers vs. Homestead Broncos

The Varela Vipers will square off against the Homestead Broncos at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Varela will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.

Varela is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 13-12 win over Dr. Krop.

Varela found their leader in freshman Angelyn Molina, who threw for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 72.2% of her passes. Molina's passing game has become a key predictor of the Vipers' success: the team is undefeated when her passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise.

Varela didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Kaylee Guedes and Chloe Campos.

Meanwhile, Homestead beat Coral Gables 19-6 on Wednesday. Given the Broncos' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 26th, while the Cavaliers are ranked 94th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Homestead's win came from a few key players Varela will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Zakieria Cobb, who rushed for 39 yards and one score, and also picked up 78 receiving yards. Another player making a difference was Jerniyah Fowles, who threw for 272 yards and a pair of TDs.

Varela pushed their record up to 9-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 2.4 points on average over those games. As for Homestead, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season.

Varela suffered a grim 27-6 defeat to Homestead when the teams last played back in April of 2022. Thankfully for the Vipers, Delexis McCall (who rushed for 70 yards and one touchdown on only six carries, and also threw for 120 yards and a pair of TDs) won't be suiting up this time.
