Baseball Recap: Murphysboro Find Success

Murphysboro hadn't done well against Carterville recently (they were 0-8-1 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Red Devils sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-9 win over the Lions. That's two games straight that the Red Devils have won by just one run.

Murphysboro got a great performance from Eli Fleming as he pitched five innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off nine hits. Fleming also tossed a walk, which is notable because the Red Devils are 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 6-7 otherwise.

At the plate, Gage Taylor was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Murphysboro: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-7 otherwise. Mason Bastien was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Murphysboro is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-8 record this season. As for Carterville, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Murphysboro will head out to square off against Centralia at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Carterville, they will venture away from home to face off against Pinckneyville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
