Basketball Recap: Cunningham Takes a Loss

If Cunningham was feeling good fresh off their 44-12 takedown of Kinsley last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cunningham Wildcats were dealt a 69-35 loss at the hands of the Attica Bulldogs on Monday. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 323rd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 96th).

Ellie Mcguire and Grace Hageman certainly did their best on Monday to avoid the loss. Mcguire posted eight points and five rebounds, while Hageman earned seven points. Morgan Oldham also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assists of the season.

Attica's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Zoie Redgate led the charge by going 7 for 17 on her way to 24 points along with five assists and three steals. Redgate has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 33 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Liberty Swingle, who went 5 of 10 en route to 15 points in addition to six boards and three steals.

Cunningham dropped their record down to 2-8 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Attica, their victory bumped their record up to 8-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cunningham will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Macksville at 6:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Attica will also get a bit of a break before their next match: they'll face off against Stafford at 6:00 p.m. on February 21st.
