Baseball Game Preview: LaPoynor Flyers vs. Cayuga Wildcats

For the second straight game, LaPoynor will face off against Cayuga. The Flyers will host the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Friday just wasn't the day for LaPoynor's offense. They came up short against Cayuga on Friday, falling 10-0. The Flyers' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

For Cayuga's part, Colt Mullican made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out six over five innings pitched. Mullican also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Cayuga is 6-2 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 7-8 otherwise. Mullican was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one double.

In other batting news, Cash Conner was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Cayuga is undefeated when Conner posts two or more runs, but 6-10 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Gus Wilfong, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Cayuga has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for LaPoynor, their loss dropped their record down to 14-12.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. LaPoynor has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cayuga struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.5 strikeouts.
