Cabrillo is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will square off against the Morro Bay Pirates at 7:00 p.m. Cabrillo is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 40.8 points per game this season.

Cabrillo proved they can win big two weeks ago (they won by 55) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past Pioneer Valley 21-18. The 21-point effort marked the Conquistadores' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Cabrillo can attribute much of their success to Gabriel Barraza, who threw for 111 yards and a pair of TDs, and Andre Brisco, who picked up 29 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Morro Bay lost to San Luis Obispo on the road by a 49-35 margin last Friday. The defeat continues a trend for the Pirates in their meetings with the Tigers: they've now lost eight in a row.

Cabrillo will have to contain Sands Dougherty as he made an impact in Morro Bay's last game. He threw for 451 yards and five touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes. Dougherty's passing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 346 passing yards. Morro Bay's leading receiver Trevor Riddiough was Dougherty's top target yet again, picking up 178 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Cabrillo's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Morro Bay, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

The upcoming game will be a clash of competing strengths. Cabrillo has deployed a run-first offense that has averaged 255 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, Morro Bay has preferred to attack from the air: they average 365.2 passing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Friday? There's only one way to find out.

Cabrillo skirted past Morro Bay 41-39 in their previous meeting back in October of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Conquistadores since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
