Football Friday: Does St. John Bosco have better all-time lineup than Mater Dei?

By Kevin Askeland Oct 27, 2023, 11:00am

Braves have a strong recent history with most of its All-Americans playing in the last 10 seasons; Connecticut coach going for 200th win in 216th game.

While the Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) football program's success at the sectional and national level dates back to the 1950s, the emergence of St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) as a consistent Southern Section and national contender began with the hiring of Jason Negro as the head coach in 2010.

Prior to Negro's hiring, St. John Bosco had a handful of nationally-recognized athletes, including its first All-American in Fred Ford, a running back who made the Parade All-American team in 1975 after rushing for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. The Braves reached the Southern Section championship game only three times (1971, 1974 and 1986) prior to 2010, but did not win any of them. Since 2010, St. John Bosco has reached the final eight times and won four section crowns.

So it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that the majority of the players on MaxPreps' all-time St. John Bosco lineup is filled with players who played for Negro over 14 seasons. In fact 26 of the 29 players selected played after 2010.

J.T. Curtis of John Curtis Christian (River Ridge, La.) is going for the all-time national wins record in Louisiana this weekend, hoping to surpass the late John McKissick of Summerville (S.C.). Both Curtis and McKissick are tied with 620 victories. Another win would give Curtis a record of 621-79-6 for a .884 winning percentage.

Another coach going for a milestone win this weekend has an even higher all-time winning percentage. Thomas Brockett of Ansonia (Conn.) has won 19 games in a row and is one win away from the 200th of his career. With just 15 losses on his record, Brockett has one of the nation's highest winning percentages at .930.

That is believed to put him right behind George Quarles of Maryville (Tenn.) at 94 percent and Bob Ladouceur of De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) at 93.8 percent for the highest winning percentage among coaches with more than 200 games coached.

A South Dakota junior at Pine Ridge (S.D.) is leading the nation in receiving yardage for 9-man football players and it probably doesn't hurt that he has one of the more intimidating names in the high school game today - Domonic Ghost Bear. At 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds, Ghost Bear is dominating the competition with 1,877 yards on just 60 catches for an average of 31.3 yards per catch.

Pine Ridge is part of the Pine Ridge Reservation, which is home to  the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The school was built in 1879 by Chief Red Cloud. The school mascot is the "Thorpes." Originally called the Oglala Community Indians, the school changed to Oglala Community Thorpes in honor of the Olympic champion and NFL Hall of Famer Jim Thorpe. The school became the Pine Ridge Thorpes in 1983.

One of the leading high school basketball scorers in the nation last year is lighting it up on the football field as well.

Grayson Rigdon of Benjamin (Texas) averaged 40.7 points per game as a sophomore last year for the basketball team. In football this year at the 6-man level, Rigdon has 23 rushing touchdowns, 15 touchdown receptions, three touchdowns on fumble recoveries, two on interception returns, one on a punt return and three on kickoff returns for a national-best 47 in eight games.

Benjamin is 8-0 and ranked No. 5 in the nation for 6/8/9-man football by MaxPreps.
