Football Preview: Mount Vernon Majors vs. Edison Eagles
The Mount Vernon Majors will head out on the road to take on the Edison Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Last Tuesday, Mount Vernon was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 33-27 to West Potomac. The Majors haven't had much luck with the Wolverines recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Matthew Moret, who picked up 170 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He is becoming a predictor of Mount Vernon's success: when he posts at least two receiving touchdowns the team is 4-2 (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Mount Vernon also got a significant boost from Antoni Fuentes, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 103 yards.
Even though they lost, Mount Vernon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 224 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Potomac only rushed for 95.
Meanwhile, Edison entered their tilt with Falls Church last Thursday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They had just enough and edged the Jaguars out 27-24.
Edison has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 4-5 record this season. As for Mount Vernon, they now also have a losing record at 4-5.
Mount Vernon didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Edison in their previous meeting back in November of 2023, but they still walked away with a 24-19 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mount Vernon since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
