Baseball Game Preview: Prout Crusaders vs. North Providence Cougars

Prout is 0-3 against North Providence since May of 2015 but things could change on Tuesday. The Crusaders will challenge the Cougars at 4:45 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Wednesday as neither Prout nor Johnston made it on the board until the sixth inning. The Crusaders never let the Panthers get on the board and left with a 4-0 win.

Gavin McCoy was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.

McCoy wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Andrew Nowell, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run. Joe Hennings also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when North Providence faced off against Johnston on Monday. The Cougars narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Panthers 6-4. The game was the first time the Cougars have beaten the Panthers on their field since May 11, 2017.

Mike Allard and Jayden Allard did most of the damage at the plate: Mike went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI, while Jayden went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Mike Ryan, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

North Providence's record is now 12-4. As for Prout, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-8.

Prout couldn't quite finish off North Providence in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 and fell 6-4. Can the Crusaders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
