Basketball Recap: Westwood Takes a Loss

Westwood was the 49-41 winner over Blythewood when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Westwood Redhawks opened the new year with a less-than-successful 61-50 defeat to the Blythewood Bengals. While losing is never fun, the Redhawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 87th, while the Bengals are ranked third).

When it comes to explaining why Westwood lost on Friday, don't look at Aneya Britt. Despite the final result, she went 7 for 11 on her way to 16 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. Britt has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more points the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amari Alexander, who posted 11 points.

Chase Thomas continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Blythewood, dropping a double-double on 28 points and ten boards. Hayley Hightower was another key player, putting up 14 points and three steals.

Westwood dropped their record down to 6-9 with the loss, which was their third straight at home. As for Blythewood, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 14-1.

Westwood will face off against Ridge View at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Ridge View is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season. As for Blythewood, they will square off against Spring Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Spring Valley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five matchups.
