Basketball Recap: Douglas Byrd Comes Up Short

Douglas Byrd was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their 13th straight defeat. They took a blow against the Lumberton Pirates, falling 75-40. The Eagles were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 41-13.

Despite the loss, Douglas Byrd had strong showings from Liam Irizarry, who posted 11 points and five steals, and Anthony Winston, who scored 15 points and six boards. Irizarry continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Peter Sauveur, who put up four points and six rebounds.

Jaiden Shephard was his usual excellent self, going 5 of 6 on his way to 14 points along with eight boards and three steals for Lumberton. Shephard is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last 43 games he's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nate Lawson, who had 11 points.

Douglas Byrd's defeat dropped their record down to 4-14. As for Lumberton, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-3.

While Douglas Byrd had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
